There are several ways for foreign visitors to Okinawa to use the Internet. If you want to use your own country's smartphone in Okinawa, you can use international roaming, but since communication charges are expensive, we recommend using other methods of Internet access.
Use free Wi-Fi
If you do not use Wi-Fi frequently, we recommend using free Wi-Fi. There are several free Wi-Fi services in Okinawa Prefecture, among which we recommend the free Wi-Fi provided by Okinawa Prefecture in cooperation with private companies [ Be.Okinawa Free Wi-Fi ] or the free Wi-Fi provided by NTT Broadband Platform Corporation [ Japan Wi-Fi auto-connect ]. Japan Wi-Fi auto-connect 】 is recommended. Both services offer numerous Wi-Fi spots, making it very convenient to use free Wi-Fi.
rent a wifi router
If you use the Internet frequently, you may want to rent a paid Wi-Fi router (pocket Wi-Fi) to connect to the Internet, which is small, portable, and has a large capacity, so you can share it with family and friends. You can also share a Wi-Fi router among family and friends.
Use prepaid SIM or eSIM
If you have a SIM-free device, we recommend purchasing a prepaid SIM. A prepaid SIM can be plugged into your smartphone and used immediately after the APN settings are completed. Since there is no need to carry around a connection device and there is no cancellation procedure, you can use the Internet easily.
Recently, convenient SIMs such as eSIM have been introduced. eSIM has the same functions as a SIM card as "data" built into the device itself, and the data is sent to a chip embedded in the smartphone device. Internet access is easier than with a prepaid SIM.
